NEWFOUNDLANDS OF KAZAKHSTAN

Request to write about Kazakhstan newfoundlands caught me nodding.
Within past two years I've been trying to establish the database of Kazakhstan newfoundlans of present time and last years. Thanks to Internet and canine websites as well as my co-author Yelena Sysa - we have a forward move. Still we have not gathered historical data on newfs of soviet period. I believe this is a work for several years. That's why today we' can tell about newfs of the last ten years. Major population of newfs always lived in Almaty. In the end of 80th - beginning of 90th newfs were brought majorly from Moscow by their fans, but we don't have their names now and cannot mention it here. Later enthusiasts of the end of 90th-2000 Margarita Sevostyanova, Marina Usova and then the owner of Vozhdy Atlantidy Kennel Viktoria Shevtsova, activists of "Deya" Club brought newfs from Siberia, majorly from Medvejego Yara Kennel. In course of time "Deya" club was moving away from FCI club system and its partner in Kazakhstan CKK (Cynologists Union of Kazakhstan).

In 90s Black Barry Berg New Dominique born 97 (owner T. Deneka) from Eben vom Kaninchenberg (owner V. Rakuta) and Isadora Bogdan New Dominique (owner Pavlyuk), Korado born 89 (owner Stitsenko) from Zhashot Yut-Ta (owner S. Khalimov) and Amaty Blacky Star (owner Vdovin) and its brother from father's side Daniel Fellis born 91 (Dan, owner A. Abolentsev) from Feliya Smoky Tale (owner Streltsova N.I.) were actively used for breeding. Almost every dog of IKU and UCI system clubs "Zhenis" and "Olymp" have their breed lines. Dan and another dog were brought to Almaty in 1991 from Krasnoyarsk. But the owner , whom Dan was brought to, abandoned the dog for some reason and at the age of 8 months he came to his new owners Sasha and Lena Abolentsev in a terrible condition. He was raised by the new owners very properly. There is a mark in his pedigree that by the age of five he became Champion of Kazakhstan. The owner herself was at loss to name the number and quality of his titles - "It was a little different then, and so much time has passed. Only dozens of medals and certificates remind of past times." Dan was big, massive, with excellent fur and a big solid head. Once he and Korado were most demanded dogs for mating. "Unfortunately, Dan's owner admits, puppies didn't always resemble their fathers."
Now Lena, Dan's owner, has a 6-year old brown bitch Beauty, who, with another puppy, was brought by enthusiasts and the same Margarita Sevostyanova maintained the breed in the club in the beginning of 2000s. Lena doesn't know the name of the second dog, and she's got Beauty at the age of one year and a half as previous owners didn't want her. The PEDIGREE was left in the club which was reformed late onr, that's why there is no information on bitches' parents.
Co-author of this article Yelena Sysa had a white-black (rare color for Almaty) bitch Lady Ellis Glen (Alisa) born 04.06.1993 (Sir Henry Glen x Kar Tarins Arnella) http://newfs.ru/base/6957. Bitch Kar Tarins was imported to Almaty. She had 9 living puppies in her litter, and Alisa had 16 living puppies in three litters - and there was the trace only of one puppy- Ronal Laden born 09.08.1996 (Daniel Fellis x Lady Ellis Glen) http://newfs.ru/base/7662/. We can trace breed lines of almost a half of todays Almaty newfs through his daughter Carron Dia Nika born 13.05.2001 (Ronald Laden x Brun Bel Carry).
Modgh Triumph born 22.10.2000 was still alive last year (Kumir from Medvejego Yara x Zhurava from Medvejego Yara) (http://newfs.ru/base/8040/) - he was spotted as a father with 2 present mating bitches, which are also penmates.
Breed lines of MGOLS(Moscow Club) dogs prevailed in 4th - 5th degree of all pedigrees; there is a frequent in-breeding with Sir James and Mario f. Volfsvinkel. There are many dogs from Red Yara kennel, lately renamed into Medvejego Yara kennel, and less from New Dominique, Terra Nova, all of them have Eben vom Kaninchenberg and/or Vladimir f. Froidental. And I suppose that 100% of Almaty newfs population have breed lines of the "Red Star" kennel.
Todays Dogs
Almaty
In the beginning of 2000 V. Shevtsova brought Maria Stuart from Medvejego Yara (Eben vom Kaninchenberg x Galatea from Medvejego Yara) http://newfs.ru/base/4286/ and mated her with Altan-Tsar from Iz Tihogo Omuta (Dag v.Elbdeich x Hot Night from Medvejego Yara) - http://newfs.ru/base/599/ and the litter from this mating was named starting with "G"- Gardian, Grammy, Gabbi with Vozhdy Atlantidy Kennel prefix. Despite that the litter was registered in CKK (FCI), later all puppies from Grammy and Gardian's matings were in other system clubs.
The quantity and quality of current population is tragically insufficient for good and full-rate breeding. Vozhdi Atlantidy Gardian(FCI) (http://newfs.ru/base/7659/) is mated with the same 3-4 bitches from "Zhenis" IKU and "Olymp" UTSI within 4 last years - almost the entire population in the city (with some minor exceptions) is his descendants.
Later on based upon request of Ibrayeva S. Cherokee dog was brought from Medvejego Yara, Krasnoyarsk. This litter was called "star" litter in Russia. Almost all puppies from this litter starting with "Ch" became champions of Russia, and some became interchampions and are winning BOS at dog shows, and became the base of population in many Russian kennels. Cherokee didn't have much luck with dog show career, he only became a champion of Kazakhstan. Almost all his life he was transferred from one house to another. His owner didn't take care of him, mates were made by different people. There is no exact statistics on his puppies as the owners were not registered in clubs. In 2005 from mating with bitch Vozhdi Atlantidy Gabby(FCI) there was a litter which was the last newfoundlands litter in CKK-FCI through "Deya" Club. There is a dog from this litter which belongs to me - Ottawa. There is no exact information on Ottawa's siblings. One dog lives in Greece, another one lives in Almaty suburbs and the third one lives in Chimkent. One bitch from Almaty has changed at least 3 owners.
Within last 2-3 years several Russian dogs were brought to Kazakhstan. One of them is Zakonniy Naslednik (http://newfs.ru/base/7658/), born 10.03.2007 FCI-RKF (Kedr Velichaviy from Siberian ear - Afina Pippa), owner G.M. Seliverstov, co-owner S.G. Seliverstov. Unfortunately due to the absence of export pedigree he may not be presented at dog shows of FCI system and correspondingly be mated in this system.
In August 2009 Krepkiy Oreshek puppy from Marleon Dusvik born 1.06.09 (Russkiy Vityaz from Marleon Dusvik x Charovnitsa Sibiri from Marleon Dusvik_)- owner Karatayeva A. was brought to Almaty.
Other Kazakhstan Cities
Three years ago Mag Ispolin Ilya Muromets born 07.07.2006 (Hariton Parming von Schonbuhl х Mag Ispolin Gardarika) was brought to Astana http://newfs.ru/base/6411/ , owner N.N. Zubova. He was presented at two CACIB shows in Astana and got Best Junior on the first CACIB show.
This July Londonskiy Dandy born 07.02.2009 (Barry Pave x Bembi), breeder A.V. Portnyakova http://newfs.ru/base/8376/, was brought to Astana from Byelorussia. For some reasons Dandy has been recently transferred to Kara Ayular Kennel, owner M.Y. Turapina. He was presented on CACIB in Karaganda and received his first "big perspective".
In Pavlodar in DeShaBear Kennel Yelena Shafeyeva has Buton Belissimo from Medvejego Yara born 2006 (Tsarskiy Roman from Medvejego Yara - Nefertiti from Medvejego Yara) and Amazonka from Medvejego Kingdom (King Sibiria v.Aiching - Chertity from Medvejego Yara) of 4 years old.
Y. Golovin from Aktyubinsk has three Newfoundland:
1. Dar Svezy Underground Chocolate born 26.02.2008 (Bjornebandens Richardo Dot Coм х Elephanta Brown from Antagrad), breeder S. Zyryanova http://newfs.ru/base/8037/. He was repeatedly presented in Kazakhstan and Russia and has a title of Junior Champion of Russia and Junior Champion of Kazakhstan. At Eurasia-2 of 2009 he's got "excellent-4" in his class.
2. Topgallant's Aquitania., born 05.11.2008 (Skipper's Made in Hungary х Dolce Amico Chay), breeder L. Pavlikovskaya http://newfs.ru/base/8633/ is also extensively presented by the owner, has many junior CAC and high hopes are put on her.
3. Abandoned beach Jessica (Cherokee from Medvejego Yara x VA Varvara). She's a very tender and nice girl but unfortunately she was not lucky with her first owners - she didn't get full nutrition in the period of her active growth and could not get to newf development norms of her age.
In 2007 the dog club brought Bolshaya Udacha for Newfort born 29.08.2007 http://newfs.ru/base/7447/ (Rudolph Grant Person Angliskiy Lord x Black Dolly Pave Black), owner T. Nigmatulina, to Kostanai. She was showed several times, including Astana CACIB in 2008.

In Karaganda
In Karaganda of 90s there were several newfs of my breeding from Rebecca-Ray brought from Moscow from Fai-Merim-Ice (owner Bugun V., Moscow) x Ralph-Rey (owner A. Sevostyanov, Krasnogorsk), an outstanding representative of "Red Star" kennel. We mated her with a dog from Astana Gai-la-Alex from Ipchie Irving x Jess-Frederina (breeder V. Ilyaschenko, Akmola owner S. Streltsov). The litter lived 4-6 years on an average. Due to Soviet collapse there was no chance to provide the dogs with full vaccines and treatment. Provision of vaccines almost stopped. Astana dog Gai died from distemper. Roberto of Marlen lived longer than the others (owner G. Sklyarova). At the age of 11 my Rebecca also died. He heart didn't stand out pyometra surgery. Unfortunately her pedigree was not saved in original. At the same time a beautiful, eye-catching, very strong Botsman dog with perfect coat lived in suburbs of Karaganda. Comparing to my Rebeca-Rey at dog shows of course he became Best Representative of Breed. He lived in a house and carted loads, coal and cinders with a great pleasure. A mess with countries division and all documents has negatively affected Kazakhstan Cynology system too. Documents and addresses were lost and now it's hard to tell the breed-lines of this dog.
Several years after Rebecca’s death my life without newf started to seem impossible for me and as a present for Chinese Dog Year my colleagues presented me with money to buy a newf, and I've got my next newf Ottawa (Cherokee from Medvejego Yara x VA Gabbi) which I took from Almaty. Unfortunately (or fortunately? :)) love to newfs is a communicable thing. I wished to occupy myself with newfies at a professional level. I decided to establish "Kara Ayular" Kennel (it's in the process of establishment now). "Kara Ayular" is translated from Kazakh as "Black Medvejegos". Ottawa has titles of Junior Champion of Kazakhstan, Champion of Kazakhstan,champion of Uzbekistan, champion of CKK. In 2007 there was a mating in Yekaterinburg with white-and black newf Super Bizon Argo (Cayuga Conquistadorforpotap х Fiamettahauz Vinland Princess), breeder N. Snigiryova, owner - K. Pritula). That was the first visiting Russian mating with a dog with many titles for the last several years in our newfs Cynology. There were three puppies in the litter. One of the girls Rossyp Almaznaya Argotta Ayu lives in Bishkek (capital of Kyrgyzstan). She was Showed only twice and got "big prospective" and "excellent" within juniors. Two dogs were kept in the kennel. That's a grief for me and my relatives, but Robertino Roskoshniy Malchishka Otargo Ayutka, a dog with very beautiful colors of "Irish Marking" came to a tragic end - he was hit by a car. The third girl of this litter, Rokot Volny Varga Kara Ayular is showed along with her mother, and she's got the title of Junior Champion of Kazakhstan, of Champion of Kazakhstan title of Champion of Uzbekistan is being executed at the moment. In March of 2009 puppies from Tomsk "Tihiy Omut" Kennel were brought to Karaganda; these are - Lord Luxembourg Ayular from Tihiy Omut and Love Story from Tihiy Omut (Lik Luchezarniy from Bereg Dona x Indiana Juna from Tihiy Omut, breeder - O. Danilova). We kept the dog, and the girl went to Almaty co-owned by Farida Siryazeva. We put high hopes on these puppies and hope that "big prospective" titles will become "excellent".
Also here in Karaganda there is one dog from one of Cherokee - Zevs (Cherokee from Medvejego Yara - VA Varvara) matings. His pedigree is from IKU club, that's why it's not possible to present him here in Karaganda, as we don't have shows of this club.
Everyday life. Routine.
I was at dog shows as a viewer in the end of 80s - beginning of 90s - and I saw at least 8-10 dogs at each one, but the owners of past years assure that there were much more. Dog shows always took part at big stadiums. Of course the dogs were just too brushed. They looked very massive but now they would hardly seem massive enough to me.
In recent years the breed is badly presented at dog shows, it's not recognized anymore, the word "newfoundland" conveys nothing for many people.
For example in Almaty within entire 2007 at 8 dog shows only 2 CKK dogs and 3 IKU dogs participated.
2008 - 3 CKK-FCI (one from Karaganda), 3 UCI, 4 IKU, 1 RKF(Russia-FCI) (Zakonniy Naslednik at extrasystemic dog show).
2009 - 1 RKF-FCI (Zakonniy Naslednik), 3 IKU, 4 CKK-FCI among which 3 were from other cities (Aktyubinsk and Karaganda) and Love Story from Tihiy Omut (Almaty)(RKF-FCI).
The same dogs visit the dog shows, fortunately they are quite successful - win groups, take medal places in Big Bests.
Due to delivery of new dogs there is a hope that the breed will reappear in Kazakhstan. Despite of boarders and huge distances dividing us from centers of decent newfoundlands breeding, it moves off dead point. Karaganda citizens visit Polazna Rescue Water Training Camp (Russia) and participate in Sea Rescue Service championships. In August 2009 Karaganda citizens started training here at Fyodorovskoye artificial lake on the territory of rescue station. The group includes four of my newfs and two Karaganda Labradors. The management of rescue station has many prospects related to this group. We plan to participate as a group in Neptune Day celebration with participation of Ministry of Emergency Situations Representatives. We hope that cynologist position and funds for dogs acquisition and training will be allocated to the station.
There is another side of newfie life. On the initiative of Yekaterina Sklyarova - my irreplaceable handler and god-daughter at the same time- canis-therapy program commenced in Karaganda since February 2009. Twice a week and absolutely free Katya and her colleagues from KARE-Zabota Animal Welfare Foundation come to "Ray of Hope" Center and work with children who have ICP. They developed a special program of lessons and there are evident results already. One of the children who participates in this program, Ansaf together with his mom came to Polazna camp from Karaganda in order not to stop his work with healing dogs. He starts to walk with dogs' help. There are newfie owners from Almaty who wish to participate in canis-therapy program.
Since last year Almaty owners started to gather at local online forum "Center of Gravity" and meet occasionally. There is a very stable group of kindred spirits. When possible the dogs are taken to small lakes or Ili river to Kapchagai Reservoir. Polazna or Sochi for many people is a pipe dream.
And finally there is another life-asserting news: a conference for establishment of national Newfoundland breed club was scheduled for September 2009.
While this article was being written we have already established National Newfoundland Club in Kazakhstan. (the conference took place and - Hooray! NNC is established) M. Turapina was elected as a president of NBC. We plan to set a mono-breed dog show, establish a one-week training camp in June in Karaganda and in August in Almaty next year. I'm finishing my article about Kazakhstan newfoundlands at this positive point.
